The Quarterback Conundrum: A Look Back and A Glimpse Ahead

Written by Nate Woelfel on .

UW_Football.jpg

When the Wisconsin football team took the field on Saturday for its annual spring game many of the regulars were turned into spectators- some due to injuries, others simply as a precaution.  The absence of some of the big-name players meant that there was even less to be taken from an already pedestrian affair.

But there was one exception. The battle for the starting quarterback position was on full display at Camp Randall. It’s a competition that has been brewing since last season.

At the dawn of the 2012 campaign, Wisconsin seemed to be dealing with a bumper crop of quarterbacks. Six, in total, participated in fall camp, each with his own unique skillset.  A trio of young men separated themselves from the pack: then, fifth-year senior Curt Phillips, Danny O’Brien; an exiled transfer from Maryland, and Joel Stave, a redshirt freshman and Wisconsin native who seemed to be all but an afterthought given the hype surrounding O’Brien’s arrival in Madison.

Before the season was over, each of the three men had started under center for the Badgers. O’Brien won the job when camp broke but, three starts and a handful of ball security issues later, he found himself on the bench in favor of Stave.

2015 QB Kafentzis has Badgers on top

While the 2014 class is barely taking it's full shape and more offers are sure to come out as the evaluation period begins anew in relatively short order, one of the biggest names in attendance at this past weekend's annual spring game was a 2015 prospect named Austin Kafentzis.

Kafentzis, one of the top 2015 QB prospects in the country, has been on the radar of head coach Gary Andersen since well before his announcement as the next head coach at Wisconsin and it appears that following Kafentzis' last minute trip to Madison this past weekend the Badgers are out in front for the time being.

"We took pictures everywhere," Kafentzis told MadTown Badgers on Monday night. "It was just sweet, we got to take pictures with the past Heisman's at the school. I mean, just everything about that school just makes me want to go to the school even more. After this weekend they are definitely on top of the list."

That offer list includes BYU, Utah and Utah State as well as the Badgers and is expected to grow big time over the summer.

Secondary shows it's mettle in Badgers spring game, could be surprise group of Spring ball

Written by Andrew Coppens on .

Coming into the spring game one of the biggest question marks for this team had to be the secondary. Not only are they replacing long-time starters and three of the four starters, but there wasn't a lot of experience or depth ready to take over... at least that was the narrative.

In the annual Badgers spring game that's not what those in attendance witnessed. Instead what was seen was a group of young players more than capable of stepping up and making plays for this team come the fall.

"The corners as a whole have really progressed, worked hard," head coach Gary Andersen said following the game. "It's a work in progress."

"The list is not real long with those kids, but I think they have competed day in and day out, and techniques, moving to man coverage, moving to playing dog coverage, blitzing sometimes doesn't sound like a lot, but it's a lot to put on a kid's plate. They've got better every single day, I believe."

Sunday Morning Hangover: Badgers Spring Game provides more intrigue than answers

Written by Andrew Coppens on .

(Ed note: Welcome back to my weekly football feature called "Sunday Morning Hangover," where I take a fresh look at the game that was and give you reasons for what went down the day before.)

If you were in search of major answers as to how the new look Badgers are going to look this upcoming season than the 2013 Wisconsin Spring Game was the wrong place for you to be in attendance on Saturday. Thanks to a ton of missing starters on both sides of the ball and a QB battle that won't be over till well into fall camp there wasn't going to be a lot of answers provided.

However, that doesn't mean the 61-47 win by the defense (Cardinal) over the offense (White) didn't provide entertainment. In fact, what it did provide was a lot of intrigue as to what will happen between now and August 31st when the Badgers take on UMass to open the 2013 season.

What was so intriguing about a game lacking definitive answers? For one we saw youth step up in big ways on the defensive side of the ball and that means a lot for the coaching staff to think about come the fall. Secondly, could we have seen one QB step up ahead of another in the battle that will wage on into the fall? We also saw some very interesting uses of Derek Watt from the fullback position.

Badgers add USF to football schedule

Written by Andrew Coppens on .

In an increasing effort to up the ante on their non-conference schedule the University of Wisconsin athletic department announced the football team has agreed to a home-and-home series with USF (University of South Florida) that will see the Badgers hosting in 2014 and the return trip to Tampa take place in the the 2017 season.

The date of the 2014 game in Camp Randall will be Sept. 27th and the 2017 game will be Sept. 16th at Raymond James Stadium (or whatever it'll be called at that point). No doubt this game will only help Wisconsin to plant a flag in the south and in a state that the Badgers have had a presence in for some time.

“We obviously recruit a lot in the state of Florida and these games will be great for our exposure down there,” UW head coach Gary Andersen said in a statement released by the school. “USF is traditionally a strong program so it’s exciting to get a quality opponent on the schedule for our players and the fans.”

On the history front this two game series will be the first ever meetings between the schools. USF is a member of the newly minted American Athletic Conference, following the breakup of the Big East as we knew it. They are coached by first year head coach Willie Taggart, who took over for the fired Skip Holtz.

Spring Game Week: Youth must answer call in Badgers secondary

Written by Andrew Coppens on .

We're just 24 hours or so away from the 2013 spring game and the first big chance to see the Gary Andersen's squad in action and all this week we've been breaking down the biggest storylines and the most important players to watch come Saturday. Today we wrap up "Spring Game Week" with perhaps the most intriguing position group not named QB for the Cardinal and White.

Before we get there, let's remind you of the other stories that we've covered here on "Spring Game Week:"

 - Who will step up at wide receiver?

- How aggressive will the new defense be?

- Will someone emerge as clear frontrunner at QB?

Today, in our final feature of our week long look at the Badgers spring game there has been a clear frontrunner for story of the spring - the defensive backfield - and for reasons we should all know, but if not let's lay that out for you in simple terms. Three-quarters of the defensive backs that will take the field on Aug. 31st against UMass will be brand new - as in never have started a game at the collegiate level.

John Ramage, the two year captain of the Wisconsin Badgers hockey program was a draft pick of the Calgary Flames back in 2010 (4th round, 103rd overall) but, instead of leaving then or a year early he stayed and finished his eligibility as a Badger. Today his NHL journey begins as the Flames announced the signing of Ramage

According to the release Ramage will be on a two year entry level contract with a base salary of $600,000 in each season (2013-14 and 2014-15) and an AAV of $900,000 (including entry level performance bonuses).

Ramage had 20 points this past season on 8 goals and 12 assists and finished his career with 53 points on 14 goals and 39 assists. His 2012-13 numbers were career highs for him, besting previous highs of 12 points, 3 goals, and 10 assists.

2014 Badgers Commit Named to ESPN 150 List

Written by Andrew Coppens on .

jadengault_display_image.jpg

Wisconsin has just four verbal commits to the it's name in the 2014 class to date, but it's already garnering a lot of attention for the quality of the players that have committed. Chalk up another one in the category of reasons to be excited as UW has one committed player in the prestigious and just released 2014 ESPN 150

That player is OT Jaden Gault (Monona Grove, WI),who comes in at 117th on the first 150 list for this class. Gault is quickly picking up steam as the No. 1 recruit in the state as those rankings become more readily available throughout the spring.

Last year the Badgers had one member of the ESPN Top 150 and that was running back Corey Clement who came in at No. 149. Those are the only two players to make the list to commit to Wisconsin in this current five year cycle (2010-2014).
