COLLEGE SPORTS BUCKET LIST: No. 40 - St. John's vs. St. Thomas

Written by Andrew Coppens on .

BucketList

What, you didn't think we'd totally forget the MTB College Sports Bucket List, did you? Well, after a break to talk a ton of Badgers football this past weekend it's about time we refresh you on where we stand.

Yep, we're up to No. 40 on our list and helping us to close out the 40's last time around was one of the more iconic games in the SEC, Tennessee vs. Alabama. This time we're looking into what is perhaps the mst iconic of DIII football rivalries, a game simply known as the Tommie - Johnnie Rivalry.

No. 40 - St. Thomas vs. St. Johns (D3 Football):

Thanksgiving day of 1901, that's the date this little nugget of a rivalry got it's start. That's right, a division three football game that dates back over 110 seasons! Hard to believe huh? Over the course of that 111 year history the teams have met a total of 80 times, 60 of which have occurred in a row.

Tommie Johnnie

St. Thomas is known simply as the Tommies, while St. John's is known as the Johnnies. Pretty simple to remember and get, right? Heck, they even play for one of the coolest trophies in all of college sports - The Holy Grail. (Quick, think of your favorite Monty Python moment, and go....)

Is QB Battle Tight or Is O'Brien Separating Himself?

Written by Andrew Coppens on .

StaveOn offense there are three huge concerns and finally on Monday the media got to see something other than stretching and punting (the only parts of practice they got to see in a full week of camp) - they actually got to see a full practice.

Media were able to attend the first of two-a-days yesterday and although our staff was back home from a weekend of full coverage, other media folks were around. So, why not give you a few of their thoughts and add in a few of my own opinions after speaking with all three QB's in the battle on Sunday at Media Day.

Throughout the first week of camp we've heard from Bielema that all three are really deep in a battle, but it was still hard to believe because we hadn't seen it for our own eyes. Well, Monday was that opportunity and according to Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the battle is real and way too close to call.

However, if you read Tom Mulhern of the Wisconsin State Journal the newest Badgers QB looked the best and is the clear frontrunner. So, who's to be believed, huh?

Well, Mulhern says in the article that it's a simple process of elimination, yet bases this information off of just one full practice (something he even warned about doing normally). Potrykus on the the other hand is more cautious while also making it clear that O'Brien looked a bit better than the others in just one open practice and I tend to side with that.

Here's my philosophy: One good day does not a starting QB make. (or insert your own Yoda reference as you see fit.) Hell, one good day does not a football player make, PERIOD.

But, here's what I am willing to say with the limited information we have at hand: After our staff got a chance to speak to all three this past weekend it's clear to us that this is a true battle, but that whomever wins it will have the full support of the rest of the group. It's also clear that the staff has confidence in all three and walk-on Chase Knox and that's because they are really playing at a higher level than what we saw from the group as a whole last year and that's at least encouraging.

No matter what happens we know that Bielema would love to have his starting quarterback named at least 10 days outside of the Sept. 1st opener against Northern Iowa.

(To me this smacks of coach speech and if the race is still tight between at least two of the guys you'll see both play a ton against the Panthers and possibly further till there's clear separation.)

Even though I think it's a bit of coach speak, it could well happen based on how the staff feels about each player running the offense. They all have arms and can throw the ball well, but sometimes chemistry and feeling are what separates the players out and it could well come down to that in making their decision.

Look for this to really play out over the next week as we head deeper into camp and also have the first scrimmage, which will be seen by the media. My early guess on this position? Well, you'll just have to tune in to Badgers Power Hour tonight at 8:30pmCT.

Abbrederis Embracing Lofty Expectations

Written by Andrew Coppens on .

AbbrederisIt's not too often you see a former walk-on wide receiver become the teams leading receiver, let alone becoming one of the conference's top ranked wide receivers coming into a season. For Jared Abbrederis those are things he's readily embracing as the Badgers look to go to a third straight rose bowl or beyond in 2012.

"I definitely want to be the No. 1 wide receiver in the Big Ten," said Abbrederis during Media Day on Sunday. "I think with hard work that can be accomplished."

Clearly Abbrederis isn't afraid to set the bar high for himself. He also wasn't afraid to set it high for the team as well.

"One of our goals is to get back to the Big Ten Championship, get back to the Rose Bowl or wherever that takes us," he said. "It's one game at a time for us and you can't jump to the end of the season, but we're definitely excited about the opportunity in front of us."

He's already got the hard work part down as walking on isn't a guarantee of anything at Wisconsin or anywhere else in the world of college athletics.

Ball Hopes to Leave a Lasting Impression

Written by Nate Woelfel on .

Ball_vs._Oregon

With a pair of off-field stories that have surrounded Wisconsin running back Montee Ball during the offseason, many have forgotten that the initial headline was Ball choosing to return to Wisconsin for his senior campaign.

Ball admitted that making the call to return was a tough one, but ultimately, the Heisman hopeful felt that he and his teammates had some unfinished business.

Five headlines for football media day

Written by Nate Woelfel on .

Though it shouldn’t strike anyone as surprising, after almost a full week of fall camp, many of the questions surrounding the 2012 edition of the Badgers football team seem to remain unanswered.

That should all change in the coming weeks, as the players are donning full pads and the media will be granted more access to the practices and begin drawing their own conclusions. With Sunday being media day, here are some of the headlines surrounding the team at this point:

Freshmen Making Mark in First Week of Badgers Camp

Written by Andrew Coppens on .

Fall Badgers 2012

Fall camp is often not about the the starters, it's more about finding those players that can make contributions in smaller ways that make a team deep and flexible. On Saturday Head Coach Bret Bielema made it clear that there are a few freshmen making impressions and ready to make real contributions to the 2012 Wisconsin Badgers football team.

Vonte Jackson and Dan Voltz were mentioned as true freshmen that stand out on the offensive side of the ball, but with the depth at running back Jackson will have to find a way to contribute in small ways if at all in his freshman season.

Voltz has made marked improvement, he's up to over 300 pounds early on in camp - making him fit in more like a true Wisconsin offensive lineman. It's not the only thing that's improved though.

"Definitely the Center-QB exchange is 100% better than it was in the spring," Head Coach Bret Bielema stated.
