Big Ten Tidbits: Leaders Division

Written by Nate Woelfel on .

The brief, two-part look at what is on the mind of head coaches around the Big Ten concludes with a look at the Leaders Divison.

Indiana

When Hoosiers’ head man Kevin Wilson addressed the media at Big Ten Football media days, his message was very simple: while last season was yet another disappointing year in Bloomington, his team is making strides.

One of the main areas of concern for Wilson was the defense’s ability to close out possessions.

“Defensively, we've got to get to a point as a team where instead of attacking the whole thing, certain things we need to be a little bit better at. One of those needs to be better at third down stops,” Wilson said. “So when we get a team on schedule -- there's a number of games last year where we had a team on schedule and a very manageable third and long that we gave up that we worked very, very hard in spring to understand the concepts of what we're trying to do and the type of routes and the schemes that offenses will do in situations to win a basketball game, get some stops.”

Wilson hopes to have addressed the issue with a few new recruits. Having a year under his belt as the head man won’t hurt either.

“We did address some recruiting issues with six junior college players that we have got set to come in to be a part of our spring practices and been with us through summer,” Wilson said. “So hopefully some maturity is going to help us with that. Year two of schematics, understanding some schemes, and coaches adjusting some schemes and adapting to players what they can and can't do and what not.”

Camping With the Badgers: Tight Ends

Written by Andrew Coppens on .

It could be argued that since the beginning of the Bielema era Wisconsin has become sort of "Tight End U," so to speak. They've had multiple players at the position go on to NFL careers with guys like Garrett Graham, Travis Beckum, and Lance Kendricks all having some levels of success at the NFL level. Well, 2012 could provide the Badgers with the most talented group of players the position has seen under Bielema from top to bottom.

We began our second week of previews leading up to the start of camp next Monday with a look at the Wide Receivers, a group that has potential but a lot of unknowns.

Unlike that group things are bit easier to map out as far as what we'll be getting from the tight end group in 2012. So, time to light up the campfire and talk some Badger tight ends in part five of our "Camping With the Badgers" series.

Probable Starters:

Jacob Pedersen (Jr., 6'4", 242lbs.): 30 rec, 356yds, 8TD's in 2011

Sam Arneson (So., 6'4", 255lbs.): no stats in 2011

or

Brian Wozniak (Jr., 6'4", 260lbs.): played in all 14 games, but recorded no stats (mostly special teams)

Thoughts on the Unit:

Wisconsin has itself another great pass catching tight end in Jacob Pedersen and it's actually hard to believe he's entering just his junior season. Pedersen is clearly the class of this group of tight ends, but he's not alone in the talent department to say the least.

There could be an interesting battle brewing for the 2nd tight end spot between true sophomore Sam Arneson and junior Brian Wozniak. They will look to replace a tight end in Jake Byrne who was strictly all about blocking on the 2011 squad. Both have much more to offer in terms of being pass catchers, but don't sleep on their blocking abilities either. If they can get good production out of them in the passing game, say 10-15 receptions on the season it will help ease the burden on a young wide receiver group as well.

Camping with the Badgers: Wide Receivers

Written by Andrew Coppens on .

camping

Welcome back to our fall camp positional preview series we're calling "Camping with the Badgers" and today we're looking at the offensive side of the ball for the first time.

Last week we went camping with the defensive backs, linebackers, and defensive line - so be sure to check them all out before you and I move forward with our first offensive position preview before camp gets started on August 5th.

So, let's get into those that will be catching passes from a new QB this season, the wide receivers.

Probable Starters:

- Jared Abbrederis (RS Jr., 6'2", 180lbs.) - 55 rec., 933 yards, 8 TD's in 2011

- Jeff Duckworth (RS Jr., 6'0", 212lbs.) - 15 rec., 230 yards, 1 TD in 2011

Thoughts on the Unit:

This is the one group that is the biggest worry, but also has the most potential coming into the 2012 fall camp.

AbberderisSpring was about as frustrating as it could be for new WR's coach Zach Azzani - who could be seen throwing his hat in frustration many a times during practice this past spring.

Losing Nick Toon, a fourth round NFL draft pick by the New Orleans Saints, will no doubt hurt, but Abbrederis was just as productive as Toon last season and has been ranked as the single best wide receiver in the Big Ten by many publications and the Big Ten Network's own Tom Dienhart.

Duckworth is most remembered for his spectacular catch on 4th and 6 late in the Big Ten Championship game and that showed us he's got some skill, but again, only 15 receptions all season isn't exactly a great look into what Wisconsin will have with him in 2012. He also missed time in spring due to an injury.

The Sconnie Scoop: The Name Game

One would think, that with all of the media attention Montee Ball has received throughout his football career that most anyone around the sport would use the “proper” pronunciation of his first name.

Camping with the Badgers: Defensive Line

Written by Andrew Coppens on .

camping

It's the end of the work week and it also happens to be the end of our look into the defensive side of the ball in our "Camping with the Badgers" series. My how time flys, huh?

Don't forget to check out the rest of the defensive previews:

Up today is a look into one of the biggest mystery positions, but one of the positions with the most potential to make or break the Badgers 2012 season - the defensive line.

Probable Starters:

DE: David Gilbert (RS Jr., 6'4", 250lbs.)

DT: Ethan Hemer (RS Jr., 6'6", 305lbs.)

DT: Beau Allen (Jr., 6'3", 323lbs.)

DE: Brendan Kelly (RS Sr., 6'6", 255lbs.)

Thoughts on the Unit:

GilbertAs I wrote earlier this summer this unit could well be the key to the Badgers winning a conference title and be in the national conversation.

We all know that last year there was a complete lack of a significant pass rush and part of that was the early season injury suffered to pass rush extraordinaire David Gilbert. But, it could've also been due to a very young defensive line overall as five of the two deep along the line were Sophomores.

What's behind them at end is a bit of an unknown outside of Pat Muldoon, who saw some good minutes behind Nzegwu and Kelly last year, but he'll need to show he can be more of a playmaker this time around.

Fast forward a year and things seem to be looking up in my opinion. Beau Allen and Brendan Kelly both had great springs and were standouts in the spring game itself, making the 2nd offensive line look pretty silly all game long.

Kelly got a lot of experience taking over for Gilbert and with Gilbert coming back off of a a broken foot and should be ready to go in camp. Getting a rush off the edge from both or either of them could help free up the best playmakers on the defense, LB's Mike Taylor and Chris Borland, even more and that will only serve to make Wisconsin's defense just that much more scary for their opponents.

The strongest part of the Badgers defensive unit took a bit of a hit though as Jordan Kohout was expected to be a major part of the rotation at defensive tackle, but chronic migrane headaches have ended his playing days and he'll be a student-coach this season.

Both Beau Allen and Ethan Hemer showed a lot of improvement and potential up the middle and could really be a great tandem. Behind them is an interesting mix of players, but it's not an experienced group, so watching them will be important this fall camp.

Other Players to Watch:

DE James Adeyanju (RS Fr., 6'2", 250lbs.): He flashed some good ability in the spring this season and could be on his way up the depth chart and may end up seeing some significant playing time behind Kelly and Gilbert.

DE Tyler Dippel (RS Jr., 6'4", 255lbs.): Another guy with a lot of potential and he should be fighting for a spot on the two deep with Adeyanju.

DT Bryce Gilbert (RS So., 6'1", 304lbs.): With Kohout no longer available on the field Gilbert is the most likely candidate to be in the mix along with Jacob Ninneman. Watching his progress in camp will be key to developing actual depth at the position.

DT Arthur Goldberg (Fr., 6'3", 270lbs.): Goldberg is most likely a devlopmental guy and was a likely candidate to redshirt, but a good camp and some time in the weight room could see him work his way into the rotation. Keeping an eye on him in camp is something worth noting.

As we all know the tragedy of the shooting at an Aurora, CO theater took the lives of 12 people and injured countless others. One of those people killed was an aspiring sports journalist, Jessica Ghawi, known to some on twitter as @JessicaRedField.

She spread a love for sports, and hockey in particular through twitter and had also been a witness to another sensless shooting at a Tornoto mall earlier.

In the wake of her death the Jessica Redfield Sports Journalism Scholarship Fund has been set up as a way to help inspire and assist others looking to get an education in the world of sports journalism.

The goal was $20,000 as seed money for the scholarship and as of this writing they are already over the $35,000 mark.

The staff here at MadTownBadgers is happy to spread the word and the hope that out of the tragedy something good will happen. So please take some time and make a contribution, let's help make sure this isn't just a one time scholarship and show the world just how the sports community comes together to help each other.
