COLLEGE SPORTS BUCKET LIST: No. 43 - Bedlam Series

It's been a bit slow on the MTB College Sports Bucket List and for that we apologize, but after giving you one of the stranger rivalries in the Big Ten, we give you one of the bet named rivalries in all of college football - The Bedlam Series - between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

No. 43 - Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State (all sports):

bedlam

Believe it or not this series' name has nothing to do with football, the term Bedlam came from the matches played between the two schools' wrestling programs (especially from Gallagher-Iba Arena at OSU) and came around the World War II era. This is also a unique rivalry because it's one that stretches across multiple sports. However, the football game today stands as the most heated of the events played on an annual basis.

The football game dates back to a time when Oklahoma State wasn't even Oklahoma State, but rather Oklahoma A&M and they were known as the Aggies, not the Cowboys of today.

Despite the lack of the name's origin, the first game, played in 1904, ended in complete mayhem at the very least with Oklahoma blanking their soon to be intra-state rivals 75-0 in a game that took place in Guthrie, OK. All told only 8 games in this rivalry have been played off campus, with seven games being played in the capital city of Oklahoma City.

The Sooners have dominated the series 82-17-7 overall. Obviously with a record like that there have been vast periods of domination by the Sooners in this one, including victories from 1946 through 1964 as well as 1977 to 1994 (one tie in there).

Oklahoma State did have one period of sustained success however, winning 5 of 8 games from 1995 to 2002, but have only won one game since then, which was last season's 44-10 beat down by the Cowboys.

So, why is a game that's been so dominated by one team on this list? Well, despite the records it's all about the pure hate in this one. Sure the Sooners have a big-time rivalry with the Longhorns of Texas, but they equally hate the Cowboys as well. The Sooners haven't always dominated the games themselves and as recent history shows they've had a hell of a time with defeating the Cowboys. The lame duck 3-7 OSU team of 2000 nearly cost the Sooners a shot at the national title, but went down to defeat 12-7 in their coaches final game.

Then there's the crazyness that was the mid-2000's as OSU nearly took down #2 OU during the 2004 Bedlam game, dropping it late by a score of 38-35 and just two years later it was only a six point victory for the top 15 ranked Sooners. All of this serves to show you just never know when these two teams get together.

With the recent money poured into the OSU program the Cowboys have become a lot more competitive with a Sooners program that's been on the national championship level for the better part of the last 15 years or so.

OSU gets their revenge by dominating the wrestling side of this crazy series - owning a massive 128-27-9 record. Oklahoma State is a 34 time team national champion in wrestling as well.

Heck, even basketball has got itself into the mix, especially during the time of Eddie Sutton vs. Kelvin Sampson in the 90's. It's also one of the closest contests in the series, with Oklahoma owning a small 127-93 record.

One can't go wrong with anything in the series - seeing a softball or baseball game between the schools is equally bitter as anything you'll see on the football field and because of how bitter things are across the board between these two schools it has to rank right up there on the rivalry meter with anything Auburn vs. Alabama or OU vs. Texas have to offer.
