Wisconsin men’s hockey name Navin, Drake team captains

The state of Wisconsin has had a big impact on the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey program in recent years. In 2014-15 two players from in-state will have a major impact as captains on the team.

Head coach Mike Eaves announced that Waupaca native Brad Navin, and Mosinee native Chase Drake will be co-captains for the Badgers hockey program this upcoming season. Both are seniors, with Navin playing forward and Drake a defenseman.

The school also named fellow senior Joseph LaBate part of the official leadership group.

Wisconsin naming those three seniors to leadership roles isn’t surprising, especially considering UW is heavy on freshman on the roster. The Badgers currently have 10 freshmen to six seniors.

It was something that wasn’t lost on Mike Eaves, as it took UW longer than usual to name captains.

“The team voted this past Monday,” Eaves remarked. “Usually we have the voting at the end of our season, but because we are such a young team with 11 freshmen, we waited until they all had some time together to get to know each other.

“It was quite clear that the two guys who are our co-captains were the picks. The voting was very close and Joseph was a strong third, so it became evident how the guys felt about their leadership.”

Going with more than one captain is becoming a more common thing, as the Badgers will have co-captains (or more) for the third time since the 2008-09 season. It’s also the 18th time in the program’s history that more than one captain was named.

Lat season the Badgers had just one captain in senior Frankie Simonelli.

Wisconsin officially opens practice on Saturday, Oct. 4, with their Red-White Scrimmage at Cornerstone Community Center in Ashwaubenon.

UW plays its first games on Oct. 10-11 against Alaska and Alaska Anchorage at the Kendall Hockey Classic in Anchorage, Alaska, at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. CT, respectively.
