The Sconnie Scoop: Secondary making strides

With a lack of depth in the defensive backfield, the secondary has been a preseason concern for the Badgers. But, as Tom Mulhern of the Wisconsin State Journal has found out, strong safety Dezmen Southward and company are ready and willing to prove that they are not the weakest link.

Sticking to the gridiron, linebacker Chris Borland has been named the No.6 player on ESPN's Big Ten preseason player rankings. Borland, who was No.13 on the 2012 postseason rankings, is the fourth Badger in the top-25.

Wrapping up our picks for football links today is this story form Jeff Potrykus which chronicles a scary moment for head coach Gary Andersen back in 2010 which has changed the value he places on taking care of himself.

Finally, we wrap up this edition of the scoop by hitting the hardwood. Point guard Josh Gasser, who missed all of the 2012-13 campaign with a torn ACL has been cleared to play in the Badgers' offseason swing through Canada, which begins Wedsnesday. Head coach Bo Ryan stated that he plans to ease Gasser back into things by playing him in 8-12 minutes per game.
