The Wisconsin wrestling opened its 2012-13 season with a 18-13 win over Hofstra in a non-conference match Sunday afternoon at the UW-Fieldhouse.
The Pride took the first two matched as a Steve Bonanno won by major decision at 125 pounds and Jamie Franco picked up a 9-7, overtime win at 133 to give Hofstra a 7-0 lead.
Third-ranked Tyler Graff put the Badgers on the board with a 5-3 win over No. 13 Luke Vaith at 141 pounds. Cole Schmitt followed suit with a win at 149 to put Wisconsin within one.
Tyler Banks downed Alex Yde at 157 by a count of 6-2 to give Hofstra a 10-6 lead at the break.
Frank Cousins set the tone for the Badgers in the latter portion of the match with a gutsy 9-7 win at 165 pounds.
A win from Jermaine John at 174 pushed Hofstra's advantage back to four points with just three matches remaining.
The momentum began to swing in favor of Wisconsin when Dylan Iczkowski pulled out an 8-5 win at 184 pounds. The Badgersgained their first lead of the afternoon in the next match thanks to a 12-5 win by Jackson Hein.
The scoreboard showed 15-13 in favor of the Badgers entering the heavyweight match.
Cole Tobin, who filled in for Connor Medberry who was out due to illness, scored on a single-leg takedown late in the third and went on to win the match 4-3 and seal the victory for the Badgers.
Wisconsin (1-0) will resume their dual season next weekend as they travel to the state of Virginia. The Badgers take on No. 23 Old Dominon on Friday, Nov. 16 and will square off with No. 12 Virginia Tech on Sunday, Nov. 18.
