Wisconsin’s softball program has been all about setting records over the last few seasons, and the 2013 season was no different. After securing their second consecutive NCAA tournament bid for the first time in school history, the Badgers put a school-record six players on NFCA Great Lakes All-Region teams.
In the 18-year history of the Badger softball program UW had sent a total of 14 players to All-Region teams, and this year they nearly had half that total alone. Last season UW had a previous school-record of three selections.
Senior Mary Massei led the way this season with her selection to the first-team, while Cassandra Darrah, Taylor-Paige Stewart and Michelle Mueller were named to the second team and Chloe Miller and Stephanie Peace took home third-team honors.
Massei led the Badgers with a .379 average and 64 hits so far on the year. She already holds the school record for hits, and added 37 runs and 15 doubles on the season.
After earning second-team Big Ten honors earlier this season, Mueller earned the same honor at the region level. She has a school-record 51 RBIs this season and needs just one more home run (11 already) to set the single-season school record in that category.
With a 20-13 record, Darrah has already guaranteed her third-straight 20-win season. She has fanned 124 batters in 194.1 innings pitched to date. Fellow pitcher, Stewart, owns a 14-5 record with a mark of 7-1 in conference play. She also has 121 strikeouts in 142.1 innings in the circle.
Miller, who is on the third-team, is just the third freshman in school history to make All-Region honors. She is second on the team with 10 home runs and has a .297 batting average with 34 RBIs heading in to the NCAA tournament. Peace is just behind Miller and Mueller in home runs, tied for third with nine on the year. She also boasts 16 steals and a .287 batting average.
All those stats could be padded as the Badgers are heading out West for NCAA Tournament action this weekend.
Wisconsin will travel out to Eugene, Ore. on Friday to play in the NCAA Regionals. They will take on Albany in the opening game of the regional at 4pm CT on Friday.
